The short version

Naturepedic is the best documented pick: it is a GOTS-listed company and its listing names the waterproof layer (a polyurethane layer) and the mattress depth range. Delara, sold by Amazon, is the most open about its waterproof membrane (TPU) and what GOTS does and does not cover.

Every waterproof protector needs a waterproof layer, and none of these is plastic-free. The honest listings say what the layer is. General information, not medical advice.

On Oct 19, 2026 we searched Amazon.com for organic cotton waterproof mattress protector queen, kept one product per brand, and read each full listing.

5 of 5

waterproof protectors in this guide use a synthetic waterproof layer: polyurethane, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a cornstarch-derived film, or an unnamed “thin synthetic” layer. Only the organic cotton is organic.

What “organic” covers on a waterproof protector

A waterproof protector has two parts: a cotton cover and a waterproof layer. GOTS can certify the cotton cover and processing. The waterproof layer, usually polyurethane or TPU, is a plastic film; some brands say a film is “GOTS approved”, which means it is allowed within a GOTS-certified product, not that it is organic.

So the useful question is what the layer is and whether the listing says so. We scored listings higher when they named the layer.

  • Look for the waterproof layer’s material: polyurethane, TPU, or a plant-derived film.
  • Check which part GOTS covers: Delara states it applies to the cotton fabric.
  • Check the mattress depth range against your mattress; two protectors here stop at 14 and 16 inches.
  • Wash before use; the listings say machine washable, and one warns to use low heat.

Naturepedic says exactly what the waterproof layer is, says the cotton is organic and names the depth range, and its company has a current GOTS certificate.

The layer is polyurethane, and “completely non-toxic” is the seller’s phrase.

Why it scored well

  • Waterproof layer named
  • GOTS company record found
  • Depth range stated

Watch-outs

  • Waterproof layer is polyurethane
  • “Completely non-toxic” has no source
  • Exact product not matched to a GOTS line

Most open about the barrier

82/100

Editorial score4.1

SellerShipper and seller Amazon.com.
PriceSee current price on Amazon

Delara states plainly what the waterproof layer is and that GOTS covers only the cotton, which is the clearest scope statement in this guide, and it is sold by Amazon.

The OEKO-TEX claim has no number and the listing leans on long marketing text.

Why it scored well

  • Names the TPU layer and its scope
  • States GOTS covers the cotton only
  • Sold by Amazon

Watch-outs

  • OEKO-TEX claim has no number
  • Long marketing wording
  • Waterproof layer is TPU, a plastic

Plant-derived barrier claimed

3. Avocado Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector, Queen

77/100

Editorial score3.9

Cornstarch-derived barrier (claimed)

GOTS record found

6-16 in depth

CoverTwo layers of GOTS-certified organic cotton.
Waterproof layer“Breathable moisture barrier derived from renewable cornstarch”; the listing also says “water-resistant”, not waterproof, in its description. PFAS tested, with “published lab results” we did not review.
GOTSVerified at company level: Avocado Mattress, LLC, GOTS-18148, valid to Jan 29, 2027.
FitFits mattresses 6 to 16 in deep.
RecallIn Aug 2024 CPSC announced recall 24-330 of Avocado’s quilted organic cotton mattress pad protectors (model SFMPAVORG, about 55,480 units) for violating the mattress pad flammability rule. That is a different product from this waterproof fitted protector.
SellerSold by Avocado Green Mattress, the brand.
PriceSee current price on Amazon

Avocado names its barrier as cornstarch-derived and its cotton as GOTS-certified, and its company has a current GOTS record.

The same company recalled a different mattress pad in 2024 for a flammability violation. That recall does not name this product, but it is a reason to check the label and the recall page.

Why it scored well

  • Barrier material and fit range stated
  • GOTS company record found
  • Sold by the brand

Watch-outs

  • 2024 recall of a different Avocado mattress pad
  • Description says “water-resistant”, not waterproof
  • PFAS and Greenguard claims not reviewed

PriceSee current price on Amazon

Bioweaves is honest that the waterproof back is synthetic and that the product is more than 95 percent organic, which is more than the “organic” in many titles.

It does not name the polymer, and “chemical free” is not a term GOTS uses.

Why it scored well

  • Admits a synthetic waterproof layer
  • Percentage of organic materials stated
  • Deep pocket

Watch-outs

  • Polymer not named
  • “Chemical free” and Fair Trade claims unsupported
  • The certificate holder is a trader

My Green Mattress names its barrier (TPU) and its care, which is better than several brands.

The GOTS claim could not be traced, the Material field only says cotton and the depth range is the smallest here.

  • Care instructions stated
  • Sold by the brand

Watch-outs

  • GOTS claim not found under the brand name
  • Fabric Type says only “Cotton”

How to choose an organic mattress protector

  • Prefer a listing that names the waterproof layer.
  • Look up the GOTS record for the brand; check that bedding or home textiles are in scope.
  • Match the depth range to your mattress.
  • Read the care line: low heat drying protects the waterproof layer.

How this guide was researched

We searched Amazon.com for organic cotton waterproof mattress protector queen on Oct 19, 2026, kept one product per brand, and read each full listing: title, bullet points, product details and the buy box. We read each full listing, searched the GOTS certified suppliers database for each brand, opened the seller line on every buy box and searched the CPSC recall database for each brand. We read the one recall we found in full. We scored products with our published method: certification (25), disclosure (20), claims (20), consistency (10) and seller (15); the value part was left out (we show no Amazon prices yet), and scores are rescaled to 100. We did not use or test any product.

We could not use the Amazon product API, so every fact comes from listings and records read by hand on the date shown, and can change. GOTS covers the organic cotton, not the waterproof layer. A GOTS record under a company name does not confirm that this exact protector is certified. We did not test any waterproofing. General information, not medical advice.

Common questions

Is an organic mattress protector plastic-free?

No waterproof one is. The waterproof layer is a film such as polyurethane or TPU; the organic part is the cotton.

Does GOTS certify the waterproof layer?

GOTS certifies the organic cotton and the processing; a film may be allowed inside a GOTS product without being organic.

Why list a recall for Avocado?

CPSC recalled Avocado's quilted organic cotton mattress pad protector (model SFMPAVORG) in 2024 for failing the mattress pad flammability rule. The listing we ranked is a different, waterproof fitted protector.
