Natural Picks compares products sold on Amazon.com using what each listing actually puts in writing: title, bullet points, description, specifications and Important Information. Where a public record exists, we check the claims against it. Unless a guide says “Hands-on tested”, it is a research-based comparison: we have not used the products.
The core rule
Score what the seller puts in writing, nothing else. A famous brand with a thin listing scores below an unknown one with a thorough listing. If a guide ranks a product lower because its listing says little, we say that, and we say that it reflects the listing, not the product.
The score
Each ranked product gets one editorial score out of 100, built from these parts:
- Provenance and certification (25 points). Where a product claims a certification or a registry applies, we look it up in the certifier’s public record and note the holder, scope and date. Where nothing is claimed or nothing applies, this part is left out.
- Disclosure (20). Does the listing name every material and ingredient, the size and the care or use instructions?
- Claims (20). Are claims specific and backed, or vague words such as “non-toxic” with nothing behind them?
- Consistency (10). Do the title, bullets, details and label agree with each other?
- Seller (15). Sold by Amazon, the brand’s own storefront, or a third-party seller, and what the seller’s record shows. A brand storefront alone does not prove the seller is the manufacturer.
- Value (10). Price per unit, computed from the Amazon price and the stated size. We leave this part out when we have no current Amazon price to use.
When a part is left out, the score is rescaled to 100 and the guide says which parts were left out.
Who gets ranked
We rank products from brands with a verifiable record: a matching certification or registry record where one applies, with no recall or advisory naming the same product, or a nationally known brand sold by Amazon or its own storefront. Unknown brands, new or low-feedback third-party sellers, and listings with contradictory details go in a “careful with” table and are not scored. A guide with a thin field of verified products ranks fewer products rather than weaker ones.
What we check
- Certifications: for example the GOTS certified suppliers database, the OEKO-TEX label check, the EPA Safer Choice product list and the FSC public search.
- Recalls and safety: FDA (food, drug and device enforcement and 510(k) clearances where relevant) and Consumer Product Safety Commission recalls. A search with no result means “no record found on that date”, not “safe”.
- Seller: who ships and sells the product, and the seller profile when the seller is not the brand or Amazon.
What we do not do
We never say a cosmetic or supplement is “FDA approved”, never invent ratings, reviews or counts, never accept payment for placement, and never claim a product “works”. Every recommendation names a limitation. Read our editorial policy for how we handle corrections.
